Sophisticated vs. Ignorance

Everyone wants to look good and in the fashion industry, everyone is all about being “fashion forward.” Well Boss Up Magazine spoke with Emmanuel “Mann” Turner, who has a clothing line that YOU should be looking forward to.

All the way from the lovely Windy City, known as Chicago, Mann is an Actor, Rapper, Partner of NueworldIVMStudios, a Video Jockey for Sophisticated Ignorance TV, and the Owner and Operator of Sophisticated Ignorance clothing line. (Talk about Hustling!!)

So how does one get into all of those hustles? Mann told us that he felt that he’s wasted a lot of his life, doing things that had no future in it, by being wrapped up in the “street” life. However, he has always been considered a smart intelligent person, but just needed to learn how to re-channel his energy to a business corporate state of mind. As Mann self-reflected, he decided that he wanted to be a better provider for his children and better man for himself.

If I had the chance to work with a celebrity, I’d have to say Jay-Z, T.I, or Young Jeezy. I feel like they’d understand my vision.

“I say when starting any business or doing anything, believe in yourself, stay humble, and keep your eyes on the prize. Set small goals on the way to the big goal. Understand it’s a marathon not a race, don’t be easily discouraged, know there will be short days and long nights. And last but not least. Stay positive.”

Mann’s first love was not fashion, but soon became one! Acting and making music were his first loves, but for Mann, fashion tied into both! However, his interest in fashion came from himself, as he always dressed nice and clean, “I’ve always gotten compliments on how I’m dressed and the outfits I mix and match. When I was living the street life I’d be seen every day by a lot of people, and I’d get compliments all the time.”

In the beginning stages of his company, Mann stated that it was difficult running a business alone and trying to find support. However, that didn’t stop him as Mann’s has a powerful drive and great thirst to be successful. (No quitters here!)

“It is difficult to find believers and gaining a good solid source of information, on how to do things properly. When dealing with clothes and artist expression, then trying to tie business into it, it’s a real left right brain battle. However, my ultimate goal is to have every other person you see or walk pass, to have some article of sophisticated ignorance clothing apparel.”

“Sophisticated Ignorance is a state of mind. My logo speaks for itself. The glasses represent sophistication and the shattered lens represents ignorance. Everyone has some!!”

So how was Sophisticated Ignorance created? For Mann, clothes just stuck out to him. Man began thinking about the amount of people that complimented and enjoyed his style of dress. At that point, he decided to take his eye for fashion to another level, by designing his own brand. Mann stated that it was a great way to capitalize on all of those compliments of his fashion sense. (Ching! Ching!) The Sophisticated Ignorance brand is universal street wear that includes tops, bottoms, joggers, and hats. Mann designs all of the clothing of the brand, which stems from things that he likes and thinks looks cool. Mann stated that it’s more like Mann’s “Man” closet! (Did you catch that!? Hope so!)

Make sure you keep up with Mann and his Sophisticated Ignorance brands, as it can be seen in a city near you! To shop the Sophisticated Ignorance brands, visit:

The Hair-prenuer

All the way from South bend, IN, Shimika Jones is an Elementary School Teacher and licensed Beautician. Since 2012 Shimika has been a Beautician and is currently working at Unique Hair salon.

With her motivation being her 7-year-old daughter, Shimika wanted more out of life and wanted to be able give her daughter a better life. Shimika states that her goal is to leave something behind that would take care of her daughter financially strong, but also be handed down for generations to come. This goal always reminds Shimika of her favorite Jay-Z quote in the song “I Got The Keys,” where Jay-Z says,

“Until you own your own, you can’t be free”

Shimika strongly believes that Black people should start teaching their children how to own their own businesses and create their own avenues in life, versus only teaching them how to work for someone else.

“My advice to anyone thinking about starting your own business is to just go for it! Don’t think about it because your only going to think yourself out of it and I believe people get the biggest rewards out of life by taking risk. Every day is a struggle but the bigger picture is what keeps me going. I will never give up on my dreams and I wouldn’t advice anyone else too. It’s simply mind over matter. We create our own future and choose our own destinies. I have learned you have to fail in order to succeed so don’t let the fear of failing stop you from chasing after your dreams. Blessings to anyone who has started or thinking of starting their own business welcome to entrepreneurship! Be your own Boss!”

So what made Shimika decide to start her own hair business? Shimika stated that she was tired of sending her clients elsewhere to buy hair, especially when they would ask her for hair referrals. She felt like she was taking money out of her own hands, and putting it in the hands of someone else. This then made Shimika “Boss Up” and start selling hair of her own, to enable her clients to buy directly from her! (Money, Power, Respect!) Shimika’s Boss moves doesn’t stop there!

Shimika then decided to go even further and start her own e-commerce hair business, to enable ANYONE to purchase hair from her, whether they are a client or not! This is how Shimika created her hair business, “Bundlez For Barbz”. (Such a Boss!)

What products does “Bundlez For Barbz” offer? “Bundlez For Barbz” offers high quality raw virgin hair extensions. Her extensions come in Indian, Malaysian, Peruvian and Brazilian Mink, offered in straight, body wave and island curl styles. Shimika’s hair bundles offer lengths ranging from 12”- 28” inches. Other products offered are lace fronts, 360 lace fronts, closures, and customized wigs. (One stop shop!)

“I want my brand to be known world-wide! That’s the biggest challenge I face today but I’m working every day to push my brand by heavy marketing on all social media platforms and just networking with people in other cities to do pop up shops and events to promote my brand.”

“Bundlez For Barbz” doesn’t stop at hair, as they also sell 3DMink lashes! & Shimika’s very own edge control, called “FLEEK-EDGE.” (Talk about a Hustler!)

“Fleek-Edge” was first launched on October 22nd, at a SipNShp event in Calumet, Illinois. Shimika says that she decided to start her own edge control line, for the same reason that she started her own virgin hair business; her sole motivation!

Also, Shimika seen a high demand for a good edge control product, which came from her clients. To again prevent sending her clients elsewhere, she decided to create her own. Now for Shimika, whenever clients inquire about good edge control products, she can simply say, “My very own FLEEK-EDGE” (Yaaasssss!) At this time, FLEEK-EDGE is not sold in stores, but however, is being introduced to local hair care stores in her area.

For Shimika, there were a few challenges that she faced, but she pushed through them and did not let anything stop her! One big challenge for Shimika was launching her own brand, rather it be hair or edge control. The complications mostly came with getting her brand out there and reaching a bigger audience, other than just my local area.

At this time, Shimika doesn’t have any upcoming events, but is currently looking for upcoming events in the Atlanta area. With that said, don’t be surprised if “Bundlez For Barbz” is presented at an event near you. It is no surprise that Shimika is looking outside of her city, as she is always searching for new opportunities in other big cities. (You go girl!)

Wondering which type of hair is popular? Shimika tells us that her Brazilian Mink is a top seller right now! Currently, Bundlez for Barbz is having a huge 3 bundle deal sale on her Brazilian Mink hair. Her deal is phenomenal as you get 3 bundles, starting as low as $150 & up!

Ultimately, Shimika wants Bundlez For Barbz to be amongst the top selling hair companies in the world, which will in turn make Bundlez For Barbz a million-dollar hair Company. (Ching! Ching!) Shimika also states that she wants FLEEK-EDGE to become a world-wide brand sold in stores all over the world, such as Walmart.

Are you in need of some hair bundles or some awesome edge control? Purchase them from Shimika on her website at: www.

Fashion has always been her passion, and at the age of 10, Lenese’s Grandmother began teaching her how to sew, which stuck with her throughout her life. The Queen of Marketing

Calling all Entrepreneurs!! Do you have a business, but need some guidance on how to get it out there? Need a pick me-up to jump start your day? Well Vannesia Darby and her company, MOXIE Nashville™, has all of that and more!

Representing Nashville, TN, Vannesia is a Digital Marketing Consultant, Public Speaker, and Blogger! (Such a BOSS!). She enjoys the opportunity to inspire others to reach their full potential in life, and her company MOXIE Nashville™ allows her to do just that!

So, what is MOXIE Nashville™? We’re glad you asked! MOXIE Nashville™ is a management, marketing, and motivation company, that also does content creation and executes digital marketing strategies around products and services. This can be anything from social media management, creating on line marketing campaigns, and/or training teams on how to effectively use their existing digital platforms. (Dope, right?)

Headshot 2017 copy 2

“Ironically, marketing was never my passion. Even to this day I always say, “I don’t like marketing.” However, I love the platforms that marketing allows others to create and the stories we get to tell through content. That is the fun part for me.”

For Vannesia, marketing was never her passion. So how did it become her passion? Vannesia fell into marketing following her graduation from Bradley University. Her degree was in Business Management and Administration, but she wanted to work in the Gospel Music industry. Since the position of a Marketing Assistant was the only thing available at the time, Vannesia took it! And guess what? Vannesia has been in marketing ever since. Oh, and Vannesia’s talents doesn’t stop there, as she does public speaking and contributes to blogs and outlets! (She’s Fierce!)

With jumpstarting her business, Vannesia did face a few challenges. One major difficulty she had was wanting everything to be perfect for her launch. Previously, Vannesia had launched successful campaigns for Grammy Award winning artists, and oversaw website creations for many artists and businesses. However, when it came to her own, she was extremely critical. Vannesia soon realized that she had to get out of her own head, and trust that her designer knew how to capture her vision!

“We must have scrapped my website at least three times! Finally, my designer talked some sense into me and I’m so grateful for that (Thanks Moe!).”

Moxie-circle-red[1] copyAs Vannesia worked her business, she soon learned when it was necessary to hire extra help to assist with projects; instead of trying to tackle everything by herself. Vannesia knew that if she didn’t want to be glued to her computer all day, she had to bring on extra designers and other project coordinators, to see her blind spots and also help shift the workload. (Taking Charge!)

20171107_212144 (2)

For those who are interested in having your own marketing company, here is what Vannesia advises:

  1. Build your entrepreneurship tribe: It’s difficult to bounce ideas off of your friends who have never been in this entrepreneurial space. You need people who have done this before and/or who are building with you.
  2. Stay Creative: I try once per quarter to do something that inspires me. That could be going to see a concert (non-work related), hiking a new trail, etc. If you’re in marketing, you need to ensure your creative side is stimulated.
  3. Realize everything won’t be a hit: Sometimes your product or service is not ideal for a particular marketplace. That doesn’t mean your idea wasn’t good, it just means it didn’t connect with the space. You must know your audience and if you launch and it doesn’t work, that’s okay too. Trust your gut and your data and and don’t be afraid to get back out there.

Currently, Vannesia is working on a few major projects and has just finished speaking at the Creative Souls Tribe Conference in Nashville! (So exciting!) That isn’t the end of Vannesia and MOXIE Nashville™, so make sure you keep up by following:

Imagine That

Calling all meat lovers!!!! Can you imagine your life without that juicy burger for lunch? How about those beef tacos from Taco Tuesday? Or that chicken bowl from Chipotle? Well The Vegan Lifestyle Coach, Nicole Bourn, can tell you all about what a life is as a Vegan!

AD - Vegan Starter Kit

Nicole Bourn is a full-time Vegan Lifestyle Coach from Washington DC, who has just recently retired at the age of 28! (Such a BOSS). She offers Vegan Meal Plans, Coaching, and eBooks to help aide in Vegan transitioning. Her newest project, which she is so very proud of, is her Vegan Starter Kit. The Vegan Starter Kit is a 145-page masterpiece that includes a step by step how to guide, ultimate grocery list, 30 recipes, worksheet on meal planning and meal prepping, plus FAQ section to answer all your questions. (What an amazing one stop shop!!)

So you’re probably wondering what it means to be Vegan? Nicole says that being Vegan means that you do not eat or consume any animal products. It means that you not only respect your body, but the planet. You understand the amount of torture and suffering animals are enduring. You understand that it is literally destroying our planet and you understand that it is destroying your body.

Becoming Vegan for Nicole, occurred after she realized that she was 100 pounds overweight. She was always tired, never had enough energy to enjoy her daughters, and had completely loss all of her confidence. Because of all of that, she knew something had to change! After reading up on natural ways to lose weight, regain her energy, and eliminate her asthma and anemia, Nicole realized that becoming vegan was her solution! (Amazing, right?!) Nicole took the steps to being Vegan and totally just went cold turkey to reclaim her life and health!

Nicole’s daily motivation started out being about herself and family. She knew that she wanted to feel better, look better, and be better for her four daughters. Once she accomplished that, Nicole’s motivation became the countless lives that she has been able to impact, due to her own courage!! (Talk about SUPER WOMAN!) Nicole is very passionate about what she does and knows that it is her purpose, which is exactly what pushed her to keep going!

At first, Nicole’s question of being Vegan was similar to everyone else’s, “Will I get enough nutrients to survive?” Nicole stated that this is huge misconception amongst herself and others, but she was able to dismantle this misconception with studying about the Vegan lifestyle. Nicole found out that needing animal protein and cow’s milk for calcium is FALSE. (Yep! You guessed it!) She found that there was no need for those things, as there are so many plant based sources that you wouldn’t believe. As Nicole stated, “The deprogramming will change lives!”

Nicole did not struggle transitioning to the Vegan lifestyle, in fact, for her it was not hard at all!! At the point of her life where Nicole was, she had already made up in her mind that her life had to change in EVERY way. Nicole stated that she did experience difficult days and cravings, but that didn’t stop her!! Since Nicole already had her mind made up knew what she wanted, she pushed through!! (YOU GO GIRL!!)

However, not everyone was in favor of Nicole becoming a Vegan. (Hater Alert!) Nicole faced being made fun of and having no support, but she still pushed through!! (Only the strong survives!!!) Nicole told us that she learned things along the way and educated herself to renew her mind.

For Nicole, being Vegan has had the most beneficial changes for her life and health. She has been able to literally give up asthma medication, that she has been taking since she was 10 years old! Nicole also suffered from chronic asthma, but since becoming Vegan she hasn’t had an asthma attack or any whizzing in over a year. (Number don’t lie ya’ll) Nicole was totally amazed by this benefit and realized that all along, the power to heal was within herself.

Nicole told us that she wished she was raised Vegan and that she had raised her children in a Vegan Lifestyle. As she reflects on how much her life has changed physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually; she just wonders what life would have been like had she made the changes sooner.

Nicole states that she enjoys the adventure and learning opportunities of the Vegan lifestyle. There are things that she never knew and never thought to study, which she is now learning and studying about. On top of that, Nicole says that going to vegan restaurants and trying new foods has been so exciting for her. For Nicole, there’s nothing that she doesn’t enjoy, outside of seeing people’s faces when you tell them you don’t eat meat!

IMG_8230 (1)

So we had to get down to good stuff!! Boss Up Magazine asked Nicole about her favorite vegan meals and snacks. Nicole stated that hands down, her favorite vegan meal is a bomb Vegan Chilil!! This Chili is in fact so good, it will make you smack everyone in your family! (That chili must be bomb!!) Nicole’s favorite Vegan snack is a ripe avocado sliced in half, add a little Himalayan salt, black pepper, paprika and cayenne pepper, scoop and enjoy; very simple and delicious. When we asked Nicole about recommendations for those transitioning to a Vegan lifestyle, she stated:

“I don’t recommend any meal in particular because I want people to understand that they don’t have to eat what they don’t like. I always recommend taking meals you already love and “veganizing” them. Meaning if you love pizza, make vegan pizza. If you love spaghetti make vegan spaghetti. If you love lasagna make vegan lasagna. This always makes people feel happy and safe.”

We asked Nicole about tips and/or suggestions she would you give to anyone interested in becoming Vegan?

Nicole says:

  1. Decide: Do I want to become Vegan? This is a serious question. I think some people just want to be healthier, which these same steps can propel you into healthy living. However, maybe you don’t want to necessarily give up everything. Maybe you want to be vegetarian or pescatarian.

There’s nothing wrong with a plant-based diet or mostly plant-based diet.

  1. Know your Why?: You might be saying Nicole, how is that important! Well it’s important because the only way to stay motivated and committed is to have a strong reason to. When those cravings start calling your name, your why will pull you off of the edge.

My Why? – I began my journey because I was tired. I was mentally, emotionally and physically tired. I didn’t like the fact that I has gained almost 100lbs. I was experiencing a lot of fatigue, body pains and asthma attacks. I felt like I was no good to my children because I didn’t have the energy to give them anymore. I wanted to live long and healthy for them and teach them better habits. So, I decided to change.

  1. Educate yourself: Being on this blog today is the first step and of course following me but do some research. The more informed you are the better. This helps to reshape your thinking, shows you what to eat and what to avoid. Tells you exactly why you should avoid certain foods and why you should increase the healthier options. There’s so much to learn that I don’t think you could possibly learn it all and that’s so exciting to me. Education will help you to deprogram and make the decision to live healthy.
  2. Grab a mentor, I know you all want to be mentored by me (no cockiness). I am working on a full group for November 2017 that will allow you to come into a space where I will teach, provide recipes, provide guidance, support and accountability. Stay tune! If you know someone who is Vegan ask them to be your accountability partner.

A “Pop” of Taste

When was the last time you baked a dessert? Well meet Maleka Manuel who bakes for all occasions!

Born in Washington, DC, raised in Prince George’s County, Maryland, and currently residing in Woodbridge, VA, Maleka Manuel has her own sweet shop.

Maleka is currently a full-time Employment Specialist, with a hustle of making cakes and cake pops! Theses delicious treats helps her bring in extra income, to take care of her family. (Talk about a side hustle!) Maleka makes her delicious treats for special events such as birthdays, weddings, and etc. Along with her traditional cakes and cake pops, Maleka also makes vegan cake pops. (Jack of all trades!)

So how does one get into making cake pops?? Well one day, back in 2011, Maleka was browsing around on the internet, and she came upon a blog by Bakerella. She instantly fell in love with the cute little cake pops and challenged herself to see if she could make them herself. She soon started her cake pop business and called it “Manuel Sweet Shop.” (Boss Status!)

Currently, Maleka makes cake pops in traditional flavors of vanilla, chocolate, almond, lemon, and red velvet. (Yummy!) So we asked Maleka about the process of making cake pops and she told us that making cake pops is definitely a labor of love. It can take several hours to make and design ONE. (OMG!)

A cake pop starts with baking a cake and then crumbling it up into fine pieces. It is then mixed with a little buttercream icing to form cake balls. The cake mixture is then refrigerated and then taken back out for dipping. Maleka says that it’s definitely not as easy as it looks! It also takes time to master the chocolate temperatures, to avoid cracks, and to just keep the ball from falling off the stick. (Whew! Sounds tough!)

Maleka told us that even though the cake pop process is very time consuming, she enjoys the outcome and finished product. Maleka’s most requested flavor of cake pops are red velvet and almond! (Yum!) Her customers also love their cake pops to have sprinkles!

“Honestly, I hate hand rolling part of the cake pops but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I know there are cake pop makers on the market, but I feel those cake pops don’t come out as tasty as mine. Believe me I’ve given up on cake pops a few times, but now I’ve mastered the little devils.”

“If you’re looking to get into the pastry industry, you don’t have to spend a ton of money on classes. I am self-taught, I love tutorials on YouTube, and I pay for classes on Craftsy as well.”

At this time, Maleka’s cakes and cake pops are only available to residents of DC, Maryland, and Virginia. So if you’re ever wanting a tasty treat and are in the DMV area, you know who to contact.

To keep up with Maleka and her tasty treats, you can follow her on:

Everyone wants to be famous and on top, but many don’t know how to do just that. Well Boss Up Magazine spoke with Actor Kendall Watkins, to get the scoop!!

Originally from Peoria, Illinois (Some call it P-Town!), but currently residing in Atlanta, GA, Kendall Watkins is a Construction Worker, Glass Setter, Actor, and Model! (Talk about a HUSTLER!)

Since the age of 3, Kendall has always had a passion for acting. He is now living out his dreams, all with providing for his family and doing what he loves as his driving force!! Kendall is currently working on his own material and monologues, including some spoken word pieces.

Kendall has been in various films and TV shows, but says his best feature was on “The Originals” Season 3 Episode 15. Kendall says “I had a smooth 64 seconds of film/face time. LOL!”

“Study your craft and Own it. Do a few Indy projects, be a joy to every set you get on and every camera you step in front of. The energy alone will get you farther. And don’t be patient. Be HUNGRY!!”

We asked Kendall about the challenges he faced in pursuit of his career, and he told us that growing up in Peoria was a bit challenging. Kendall explained to us that Peoria is a “Build your own fire” type of place; there just isn’t much just going on there. However, that did not stop him! Kendall took his dreams and relocated to Atlanta, where he says he was able to find many “crash/pop up” sets for exposure; but Kendall doesn’t recommend anyone to go that route.

Outside of acting, Kendall loves planning events. In fact, Kendall used to be a Promoter and Indy Manager. (Jacks of all trades!!) Kendall says that all of that was and still is fun, but doesn’t care to do them as much, as you have to rely on other parties too much.

When asked who Kendall idolizes, we found out that his two favorite Actors are Marlon Wayans and Denzel Washington. (Talk about amazing!!) Kendall says that Marlon Wayans has amazing range and Denzel Washington just has “That Presence.”; It’s not just his name.

Kendall continues to say, “Like even if he were to put on a disguise and they not announce his name, you’d probably still feel that Greatness. I want to see and learn that firsthand.”

So you’re probably wondering what other projects is Kendall currently doing? (We were too!) Currently, Kendall is building a brand and starting his own personal hashtags: #PhosdayMonos and #HappyPhosday. Those two hashtags will lead you straight his videos or one of his positive inspirational posts. (The Hustle Never Stops!)

What a “Bomb” Shell

Luxurious skin seems to be #Goals for most people, but those goals can become hindered due to skin conditions that people don’t know how to treat properly. Well Boss Up Magazine spoke with the lovely Tasha Kinney, who just may have the solution to your dilemma!

Tasha is originally from Peoria, IL (Also known as P-Town) and is the owner of a skin care and beauty business called Reminisce Bath Bombs, which focusing on bath and shower bombs! (Dope right!?) For Tasha, hearing people say, “wow this is a great product that I can see such a great change in my skin”, is what she loves about creating her products and Tasha strives to be the one who not just makes a product to make a quick buck, but to help others with problematic skin. (Boom!)

Tasha’s skin care products originally started with her trying to find a product that worked for her 5-6-month-old son’s skin, as he suffered from eczema. “I tried almost everything that any parent could or have ever thought of for their child’s skin, but nothing was working.” At this point, Tasha decided to take matters into her own hands. (Super Mom!)

Tasha began dabbling around with some ingredients, that were safe for newborns, until she created he wonderful bath bombs! To verify if her products were working, she gave out many free samples for other to try and provide feedback. This helped her learn what others thought worked for them and what she could improve on. At the beginning stage of her business, Tasha struggled with the cost of her necessary supplies, website fees, and product samples. Tasha was a stay at home Mother and wasn’t working a typical 9-5, but it definitely did not stop her grind Tasha was determined to get the news out about her product, to whoever she would come across. Hoping to change one skin at a time, Tasha shared her results and products with others; and instantly, within 3 days, she received phenomenal results. (Simply Amazing!)

“My current business focus is creating new products, seeking feedback from bloggers and customers, and hopefully to have my products endorsed. I am just taking it one day at a time.”

“Never doubt or limit yourself as to what you can do. If you have a dream or a goal, follow it through. The journey is so worth the wait and is very rewarding once you succeed. You don’t want to look back at your life and wonder “what if I would have done that”. When no one else believes in you, believe in yourself.”

Tasha stated that she has always loved beauty care products, but it never was a passion. However, seeing such amazing results with her son sparked such an interest for her. Sharing her joy of her products with others developed into something truly amazing and beautiful, which made creating bath and shower bombs her new-found passion.

Make note that Tasha’s business doesn’t stop at bath bombs!! Tasha also has products of shower bombs, manicure bombs, and pedicure bombs. And just in time for the holidays, Tasha will soon have sugar scrubs and bar soaps available for purchase. (Tis’ the season!)

The Travelnista

Traveling around the world is a dream of many, but a reality of few! Well we spoke with the lovely Louise Ngcamu, who is living the reality of traveling around the world!!

Currently residing in Boston, MA, Louise is originally from Johannesburg South Africa, and works as a Nurse’s Aide and she is continuing her education! (Such a BOSS!) Louise yearns to live a full life and not be consumed with the materials of this world or work, work, work!

Driven by the precious time spent with her family and friends, Louise loves traveling to places near and far, getting to know people from different backgrounds, exploring nature, and trying new foods. Louise states that all of those things really drives her and most importantly brings her closer to God. (AMEN!)

Louise told us that when she travels, she usually travels alone. Since living in the U.S, she has made a ton of friends who are now like family to her. She has done some local trips with friends, but says those are hard to plan. She has had the joy of traveling with her Mom, who Louise says is a great travel partner (So sweet), however Louise tell us that she travels alone because it is easier.

Louise stated, “I get to plan exactly what I want and once I’ve committed to the plan, I do whatever it takes to see it through.”

Boss Up Magazine asked Louise about her most recent trip, which was to Italy and Hungary! And of course we got the full scoop!!

Louise recently attended a wedding in Budapest, Hungary, which took place in the perfect city with people from all walks of life. The wedding took place in a castle and was truly unforgettable. With going to Italy being her ultimate dream, she decided to go for it and book herself a flight!

Louise stated that it was the best decision she’s made. Not only was her trip to Italy the best decision she’s made, it also provided her with her MOST unforgettable moment! Louise said that while in Pompeii, Italy, her first pizza was amazing and she’d never tasted pizza so good. (Yummy). Louise stated, “I’m not even crazy about pizza back home, but this pizza, I’d eat it every day until I grew tired.”

Louise did experience a slight bump in the road during her trip, as her purse was stolen in Rome on a local bus. Thankfully she was not harmed and didn’t have any cash inside. Louise says that that moment did not take away from her tip; it was only a lesson and a story to tell.

“If you want to travel the world, just do it! Don’t wait until you are rich or when you have money because you will never do it. My theory is we spend money on stupid expensive materials like electronics and etc. Use that money to invest in yourself and see the world. It’s better than any school you could ever attend. When you travel ignorance slowly disappears.”

Louise told us that Brazil, Hungary, and Italy are the top three places she would definitely visit again! (We’re going to need a postcard soon!) Here’s exactly what Louise had to say about all three:

Brazil: “I would go back to Brazil and more specifically Manaus and the Amazon. The locals were so kind and welcoming. I enjoyed seeing how they live without all most of our modern necessities and were happier than you and I. They live the simple life. I admire that.”

Italy: “There is so much more there that I have yet to explore, along with the food and the driving force.”

Hungary: “I found Budapest, Hungary to be corky and different. I would like to explore it a whole lot more.”

Now ask yourself, where would $5,000 take you?? Well, we asked Louise this same question! For Louise, $5,000 would take her to Iceland! She just wants to be one with nature and dies for places that have nothing but natural surroundings. Louise says that she loves how she would feel in places like that, as nothing else really matters.

Louise stated, “There is so much more to life. God lives and he is all around. His works are displayed all around us, we just have to be present in those moments.”

During her recent travels, Louise experienced major cultural shocks. Louise told us that in Italy people didn’t care about personal space. During her flight to Rome, with many locals on board, she sat in the middle seat with two Italian guys on both sides of her. The guy next to the window seat would put his foot on her side of the seat, lean into her and talk to the guy next to her while, totally invading her space. (Wowzers!). “People there are very affectionate and have little or no regard for space.”

For her experience in Hungary, she learned that pedestrians do not have the right of way. People drive fast and even though you may have the signal to walk, cars start approaching as if to hurry you. Louise told us that in Hungary, it felt like people smoked everywhere and she felt like she just couldn’t get away from it.

During her trip to Amazon, Brazil she experienced the culture shock of seeing people living so simply. They grow their own food, take boats to school, and even get their medicines from the rain forest. (So Amazing!) For Louise, that was amazing to witness.

Not only did Louise experience some amazing and interesting cultural shocks, she also tried food that she was initially afraid to try. In Hungary, she tried Hungarian Liptauer, which is cheese spread made from sheep milk, goat cheese, quark and cottage cheese. (So brave!).

These trips aren’t the last of Louise, as she plans to backpack across Europe with a friend soon. (So Fierce!) Make sure you keep up with Louise and her journey across the world, by following her on Instagram at: @lulubelle2407.

The Motherland

If you could go on your dream vacation, where would you go? Jamaica? Bahamas? Africa? That’s right, the Motherland! Ashley Lowe went to South Africa!!!

Born in Peoria, IL, currently residing in the DMV area. Ashley is a mother, first, a licensed social worker, a published author, and an entrepreneur (Hustle! Hustle! Hustle Real Hard!!!)

As long as Ashley can remember, she has always had the dream of traveling to Africa. Not only is Africa the Motherland but it is the mother of all nations. Ashley’s trip was to Johannesburg and Capetown, South Africa. It took a total of 11 days including travel to and from.

Ashley’s most unforgettable moment was her visit to Constitution Hill. (So amazing!) Constitutional Hill is where various political groups meet to fight for various causes. It is also the site of their courthouse, where various cases are tried and it is the site where the jail used to be located. The jail is now a historical site, where hundreds of tourists come yearly to visit.

Ashley was able to see and hear stories about the mistreatment of the detainees and it was heart breaking. Furthermore, Ashley learned that many of these detainees had not really committed crimes. (This is so terrible!)

During the tour, she visited the solitary confinement section of the jail, which SUDDENLY shifted her mood. At that moment, Ashley stated that she literally felt the spirits of those that experienced the cruel punishments. Many of those that were housed in solitary confinement were starved, treated unfairly and eventually lost their lives, due to the harsh punishment that they endured while in solitary confinement. (Heartbreaking)

Ashley felt like it was agonizing to learn how the jail functioned daily; it was just sad and unfair. Her tour made her understand how and why Apartheid took place and why Mandela was such an influential individual to many South Africans.

During her trip, Ashley experienced cultural shock that totally made her trip an unforgettable one. Ashley observed how class system operates which is very different from her home country. In America their are 3 separate classes based income levels, lower, middle, and upper class. In South Africa the class system is operated by skin pigmentation which affords many Africans opportunities. The darker your skin, the lower you are in the class system and the lighter your skin complexion the higher you are in the class system. Also, many of the homes are not suitable for living; these homes are informal housing units called slums.

“Upon my return to the U.S., I felt rejuvenated and prepared to make sure that I do my part. Their is an old African adage, Sankofa “Go back and fetch what is in the past in order to move forward.” It is my responsibility to learn my history, to know my history and to teach what I have learned, so that we as a people can move forward and continue to progress. I feel like my profession and life goals are intentional, it is my God-given responsibility to fight for what is true and what is right. I feel like my driving force is to pursue God’s purpose for me on this earth, and whenever my expiration card is pulled, I want to be empty because I decided to allow God to use me and pour every single gift and talent inside of me to impact and the lives of others.”

Ashley has the following advice for anyone planning to go the Motherland, “Limit Social Media and enjoy every moment. Talk to the people and have fun!!!

Africa will not be Ashley’s last trip, as she has many more trips planned for the near future! To learn more about her future trips, be sure to follow Ashley on:
